Career and Parenthood: Finding the Equilibrium

Building a successful career while raising a family often feels like an impossible balancing act. As businesses grow and professional opportunities increase, so do the demands on your time, energy, and attention. It even gets harder when family continues to need you in ways that no calendar or to-do list can fully predict.

In this episode of BizNest, Penny shares her personal journey as a working mother, entrepreneur, and single parent. Drawing from two decades of experience, she reflects on the realities of growing a business while raising children, the difficult choices that come with both roles, and the lessons that helped her find a healthier rhythm along the way.

There Is No Perfect Balance

Many professionals spend years trying to achieve the perfect work-life balance, but Penny believes that balance isn’t about giving equal attention to work and family every day. Instead, it’s about recognising that different seasons of life require different priorities.

Early in her career, her focus was on providing financial security for her children. That meant working long hours, juggling multiple freelance jobs, and making personal sacrifices. As Virtua grew and her support system expanded, she was able to create more space for quality time with her family.

Penny encourages listeners to accept that there will always be trade-offs. Some days your business will need more of you, and other days, your family will. The important thing is making intentional choices based on what matters most in that moment.

The Reality of Working From Home as a Parent

Remote work offers flexibility, but it also blurs the line between work and home.

Penny shares memorable moments of taking client calls while caring for a toddler who simply wanted to stay close to her. Like many working parents, she experienced the challenge of trying to stay professional during meetings while also responding to the needs of a young child.

These moments present a reality that many professionals discovered during the shift to remote work. While working from home doesn’t change the dynamics, it even makes one more vulnerable to distraction.

Instead of striving for perfect separation between work and family, Penny emphasises the importance of flexibility, understanding, and adapting to the unexpected.

Systems Make the Juggle Easier

One of Penny’s biggest lessons is that good systems reduce unnecessary stress.

She plans her week in advance, schedules both business and personal commitments in a single calendar, and intentionally leaves open spaces for unexpected events like school activities, medical appointments, or urgent client needs.

Within the business, project management tools like ClickUp help keep projects organized and give the team visibility into tasks without relying solely on meetings. These systems create structure while still allowing room for life’s inevitable surprises.

The goal is to ensure everything stays organized and balanced, so you can stay focused on what’s important.

You Don’t Have to Do Everything Alone

Building a business and raising a family are both team efforts.

As Virtua expanded, Penny realised she couldn’t continue managing everything herself. Learning to delegate responsibilities, trust her team, and rely on an executive assistant became essential for sustainable growth.

Outside of work, support from her parents, siblings, and caregivers has also played an important role in helping her balance the demands of entrepreneurship and parenthood.

Whether it’s family, trusted colleagues, or professional support, there is nothing wrong with asking for help because it’s a way to allow your business and your family life to thrive.

Let Go of the Guilt

Perhaps the most relatable part of Penny’s story is her message about guilt.

Many working parents feel torn between being fully present at work and fully present at home. Penny admits she once believed she had to do everything perfectly, but over time realized that impossible standards only create more pressure.

There is no perfect parent, no perfect entrepreneur, and no perfect formula for balancing both.

Instead of worrying about other people’s opinions or comparing yourself to unrealistic expectations, focus on your own values, your family’s needs, and the season of life you’re currently in.

When you give yourself permission to accept trade-offs, you can make the journey far more sustainable.

Success Is About Remembering Your Why

You might get overwhelmed by the long to-do list as you juggle career and parenthood, but it’s important to know why you’re doing all of this.

Many professionals and business owners have changed their perception towards career success. Instead of just looking at it as achieving milestones, they also consider it as creating opportunities and stability for their loved ones.

Finding equilibrium doesn’t mean splitting your attention equally between work and family every day, because it means building systems that support your goals, surrounding yourself with the right people, embracing flexibility, and remembering that your priorities will naturally evolve over time.

When you stop chasing perfection and start focusing on purpose, you’ll find that success isn’t measured by doing everything, but about doing what matters most.
